The World's Stage Comes to Provence

Avignon Festival

The World's Premier Theatre Festival

Event Overview

The 79th edition runs from 5 to 26 July 2025, transforming the historic city of Avignon into the global epicenter of contemporary performing arts.

Key Details

🗓️ When: 5-26 July 2025
📍 Where: Avignon, Vaucluse, Southern France
🎭 What: Theatre, dance, music, contemporary art
🌍 Featured Language: Arabic will be the spotlight at the Avignon Festival 2025

Founded in 1947, this is the most important theatre and performing arts event in the world, in terms of the number of productions and spectators it attracts. The festival utilises over 40 indoor and outdoor venues across the city, ranging from the massive courtyard of the Popes' Palace, to a gymnasium, to an intimate garden in an old manor house.

Running parallel is the Festival Off, featuring more than 1500 shows during the 3-week duration of the festival in July.

What Makes This Special

This year marks a particularly significant edition with several unique elements:

  • Opening Performance: The collaborating artist will be choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas, who will open the Cour d'honneur of the Palais des papes in July 2025.

  • Guest Language Focus: Arabic will be featured as a guest language.

  • Special Project: The Pièce commune - Volksstück project, in partnership with the Wiener Festwochen, will be directed by Milo Rau.
